Discussion:
Good Shops In Seattle?

In the spirit of bringing this newsgroup back from a premature death I have
a question.

Does anyone know of specific shops that have a nice selection of Sanrio
goods (or any other Japanese import items) in the city of Seattle?
Particularly Pike Place Market or Chinatown as I will only be able to visit
these two sights while there.

I'll be leaving on the 9th (this month) so any info you can give me before
then will be appreciated!

There are three official Sanrio stores in the Seattle area but
unfortunately none in downtown Seattle. Your best bet would be
Uwajimaya in the International District (Chinatown). They have a decent
selection of Sanrio, and they also have San-x in the bookstore there.

If you have some time, it's about a half hour bus ride from downtown
Seattle to the Sanrio store in Bellevue Square Mall. If you're
interested, I can give you the bus info.

Thanks for the info! I will be sure and check out that store, but I won't
have time to go to the Bellevue Sanrio. My friend works at that mall
anyway...I can always con her into picking things up for me ^_^

Thanks again!

Don't forget to check out the candy/snack aisles at Uwajimaya... you
might find some Kitty snacks items! They also sell the Kitty rice
cooker and waffle maker there!

Thanks Joyce! The people I'm going with , who don't collect Sanrio, will
get a kick out of seeing all that stuff.

Does anyone know if they also sell other Japanese items their...anime/manga
other imports? Or are there plenty of other stores where those things can
be found?

Uwajimiya is a big Japanese grocery store which also sells japanese
kitchen goods/gifts and it also has a bookstore. You could check in
the bookstore for anime/manga, but I'm not 100% sure if they had those
(though I kind of remember seeing it there before).

According to the Sanrio store locator, there's a store called "Unique
Anime" and that's in the Westlake Center (a few blocks from Pike
Place). I've never been there, but with a name like that, you could
probably find Anime/Manga there (or at least goods related to those).
It looks to be at the corner of Pine and 4th.

Here's the info:
Unique Anime
206-621-8816
Westlake Center
400 Pine St Suite 018
Seattle, WA 98101

Hope that helps!

WOW, thanks for the info Joyce--you're awesome!

I'm never quite sure if the stores listed on the locator actually exist any
more. Now if my husband and I can just talk my friends into a little side
trip to Westlake Cntr...

OMG!!! I had the best time! Thanks for asking. Now that I'm back, I
really want to move there...love the mountains, rain forest, sound, ocean,
everything! Not to mention my beloved sister and best friend have resettled
there. The urge to follow their example has only strengthened.

And Uwajimaya is awesome! Their Sanrio section wasn't the best, not bad,
but the San-X stuff in the book store was more than I expected, being
without anything like that here. I can see myself shopping there often for
groceries too. My husband was hoping for more manga translated into
English, but he enjoyed the experience none the less.

Thank you everyone for your help in locating shops (even though Uwajimaya
was the only one I made it to, I still spend $100...the most I've spent in
two years on my collection). That's what I've always loved about this ng,
everyone is always so helpful and informative. Thanks!

Glad to hear you had a good time! Oh wow! $100... I can't imagine
what would've happened if you had gone to more than 1 store! So, what
stuff did you get? What San-x?

Yeah, I went a little crazy...there's no where in my home town I can get
San-X, so I figured I'd stock up. And I haven't bought ANY (just about)
San-X or Sanrio things for myself in the past year in preparation for this
trip. Can you tell I've used these arguments on certain people
before...(yes my darling husband I'm talking about you, hehe).

That said here's the list of things I got for my money:

San-X
sm. Sea Paradise Penguin plush
4 sm. flower letter sets and a gift bag to match one
Tare Panda-snowboard pen, snail charm, sushi stickers
Kogepan-2 strawberry notepads and a sticker sheet
Nyanko-sack of stickers and dessert charm
Orange Boy-sticker sheet, bell charm and scissors with charm
And the sweetest little jellyfish character sticker sheet...do you know the
name of this guy?

Sanrio-HK
Kiku notepad (and tattoos for my niece)
Flower shop letterset
Sushi shop keychain and pen to go with the letterset my friend gave me for
my birthday

I would have bought much more if they weren't so expensive...($6-$10 for a
plush keychain and $12 for that small Sea Paradise plush I did buy!). Also
they didn't have every type of item from each character's line like
lettersets and pens. But I'm very satisfied with what I did find and I
think I've gotten my friends interest piqued in San-X. They were oohing and
aahing along with me!

Thanks for your help and your interest in my trip!

Hmmm... I tried looking at http://www.san-x.co.jp but didn't notice
it. I want to say it's "puca" but I'm not sure about that.

Lots of great stuff you got! I've only bought minimal San-x stuff
myself. Your stuff sounds great! And I love those Sanrio items you
got! I always try to tell myself that I'm "not collecting" San-x
too... LOL But, I've bought some Nyanko items recently!

I think I was really, really off on the name of that character
earlier! I tried to look for it... and look what I found instead...
http://www.sanrio.co.jp/english/characters/w_chara/31.html

So... I guess I was thinking of the name of the Sanrio jellyfish!
(Even though I didn't picture it to look like that.)

The funny thing is the San-X character I have looks very similar to the
Sanrio one you found. I guess they like to copy each other. The only
differences are the tentacles, hair and mouth expression.

Ok...I just looked on the San-x website and found their list of new
characters by each year. These stickers say 2003. Here's the page
http://www.san-x.co.jp/newcha/newchara03.html . The little jellyfish is
listed under February, first one, second line down. But I can't read what
it says (too small and definitely not English).

That Sanrio jellyfish is so cute...they should bring it back!

The San-x jellyfish is cute! Thanks for pointing him out to me! I
couldn't figure out the name either... and the Babelfish translator
isn't any help at all for this type of stuff!

Argh... if I keep looking at all that San-x stuff, I'm going to want
to collect all the cute characters! I especially love the
food-related characters! (Maybe I'll just get one or two items for
each of those... LOL)

I know what you mean! That's why I've already given myself that rule and I
always try to keep it to the small stuff (charms, notepads, stickers etc.)
But there are so many cute characters that you can still spend a small
fortune like I did LOL!

I try to buy the small things too... I almost never buy anything that
is over $10/item, or even plushes ('cause they take up a lot of
space), but $5/item still adds up quickly! And I love stickers! It's
not hard for me to rack up $30 in just stickers!

Anyway, I'm glad you had a good time in Seattle! It was great to hear
about everything you got!

Kogepan-2 strawberry notepads
oh, i love the kogepan strawberry line! i like the image where he is putting
the strawberries on his head and the strawberry pan is looking at him. it's
just so funny, but sad. because kogepan is burnt...so he is bitter. he'd yearns
to be a cute pan or strawberry pan. i have a kogepan plush and he's wearing a
strawberry on his head!

Eeee...so cute! I didn't see anything like that.

One of my notepads has him seeing all these cute strawberry pans with
berries on their heads so he sews a strawberry had and puts it on his head.
Poor thing! Does he ever learn to accept himself the way he is?

awww... sounds so cute! I love strawberries! I'm still trying not to
start another collection... LOL I've mostly limited myself to a few
Nyanko items, right now. But, I keep eyeing the Yogurt guy, those
cute little peas and some others (sorry I don't remember their names)!
Those foodie characters are so cute! I guess it's good I can't
